Gur Emir Mausoleum, Samarkand

Dedicated to the Turco-Mongol conqueror Tamerlane and his sons and grandsons, Gur Emir Mausoleum lies within the ancient city. Built in the late 14th and early 15th centuries, the mausoleum features a mix of Persian and Mongolian styles, serving as a precursor for numerous Mughal tombs throughout central Asia--many of which were built by Tamerlane's descendants. Examine the elegant azure dome and elaborate entrance gate, decorated with various mosaics and carved bricks. Inside, observe the solemn monumentality adorned with geometrical ornaments on terracotta bricks and diverse muqarnas. • Gur-Emir (translated as "Tomb of Emir", "Tomb of the ruler")-Tomb of Timurids dynasty, masterpiece of Architecture of Central Asia, burial place of Amir Timur, whom we know more as Tamerlane. Gur Emir strikes not so much its appearance (and only for the sake of it it is quite possible to go to Uzbekistan in general and to Samarkand in particular), how much beauty and riches of internal furniture. It is important to note that Gur-Emir was the prototype for the well-known architectural monuments of the Mughal epoch: Humayan Mausoleum in Delhi and Taj Mahal in Agra, built by the descendants of Timur, who ruled in northern India.

  • It is a little far away from the main but it is worth the ants to go! You can also feel a wonderful history. The sister of the shop is also friendly and explains various things. By the way, the sales pitch was amazing because the taxi was parked quite far away.

  • Splendid Muslim architecture and place to seek solace
  • Timur is a tyrant for the rest of the world. In Uzbekistan, he is the foremost national hero. Guess history is about who writes it. This is the mousoleum where Timur is buried. The outside is gorgeous. Elegant and clean design - not an over-engineered excess. The inside is breathtaking. Particularly the room with the tombs. I sat in a corner watching the locals and families come in and pray. Quiet moments that take you into the far far past.
