Bibi-Khanym Mosque Bibi-Xonum, Samarkand

4.3
Feel the grandeur of ancient Samarkand at Bibi-Khanym Mosque Bibi-Xonum, the remains of a gigantic mosque and a jewel of Tamerlane's empire, built after his Indian campaign in 1404. With the 40 m (313 ft) high sky-blue cupola over the main chamber and two smaller mosques in its spacious courtyard, this represented the largest mosque complex in the Islamic world at the time. Falling into disrepair after 1583, the mosque still displays its classic Persian-Islamic style with four ornate iwans and a pishtaq standing 38 m (125.5 ft) tall. The interior courtyard features a colossal stone Quran stand. A mausoleum to Tamerlane's favorite Chinese wife stands opposite to the mosque. • One of the most grandiose mosques in the whole Muslim world, the largest mosque in Central Asia. The name "Bibi-Khanum" translates literally as "the eldest princess" (or "the eldest wife"). The Itsoriki believe that Bibi Hanym was built on the orders of Amir Timur immediately after his return from India, where he won, and it is named in honor of his beloved wife Tamerlane. Now only five surviving buildings can be seen from the whole complex: a portal, a large mosque in the courtyard, two small mosques and a minaret. In addition, the center of the courtyard still decorates a huge marble stand for the Koran, made even at Ulugbek. And also locals tell the old belief: if the woman for a long time can not get pregnant, it is necessary to come in Bibi Khanym, to touch to the stones of a mosque and to that place where there was a big Koran, and to pray.
