Built to protect a lighthouse from British invasion, Fortaleza del Cerro stands proudly over the city, offering a fantastic view. The fortress, built in 1839, sit at the top of Cerro de Montevideo, some 439 ft (134 m) above sea level. Today, the historic building houses a military museum, home to a collection of firearms. The lighthouse protected by this fortress continues to operate and runs regular tours. The area around the fortress is a little bit rough, so stick to main roads or opt for a taxi to get here. It allows to see to the south, the existence of what remains of the ancient Refrigerators that forged the splendor of the Carnica Industry in the middle of the twentieth century. and to the West and North the entire countryside of the Department of Montevideo, taking a perspective similar to those that occupied it for the defense of the Bahia.

The fortress is far away and is in a dangerous region of the city. From what we've been told, it's more visited by Uruguayans than by tourists. The ascent to the fortress will worry and when we arrived, it was all deserted, we left the Uber, which immediately went away, and we saw ourselves in a wilderness, without information, people, etc. The rest of our group arrived next, in another Uber, who had already made other races with us and so warned them and waited a while. It was our luck, because the fort was in retirement (not informed on the site) and we had to come back. If the Uber hadn't waited, we would have been a good time exposed to cold and danger. Well, the view really is very beautiful and inside is a military museum. Evaluate well if it would be worth the risk, because the city has other points more interesting (and safe) to know.
