Fray Bentos

4.5
The capital of Rio Negro Department, Fray Bentos sits on the banks of the Uruguay River as one of the region's most important port towns. Founded in 1859, the town of just under 25,000 remains best known as a center of the meat processing industry, with the Liebig's Extract of Meat Company (inventors of the Oxo cube) opening an industrial plant here in 1863. Though the plant closed in the 1960s, the name Fray Bentos still appears on the company's products in many areas of the globe. Industrial sites in the main town now offer some of the top Fray Bentos attractions, with many converted into museums and inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2015. Fray Bentos is in Rio Negro Department. Plan your tour of Fray Bentos and Uruguay travel itinerary using our Uruguay trip planner .
