Set on a high bluff overlooking the Puget Sound, Fort Worden State Park is home to beautiful scenery and a wealth of recreational activities. The park, which spans 176 hectares (434 acres), was once a U.S. Army base and features a number of historical military buildings here. The Coast Artillery Museum informs visitors about coastal military history, focusing particularly on Washington's Puget Sound. You can explore the park via its 27 km (17 mi) of hiking trails or 19 km (12 mi) of biking trails. Bring a picnic, if you like, to enjoy in the picnic areas overlooking the cliffs of Artillery Hill or Strait of Juan de Fuca. The Cable House Canteen includes a cafe and convenience store. We had a great time at Fort Worden. My boyfriend and I took the kids during spring break last week and we ALL had a wonderful time! That may not seem like a big deal, but we have 5 boys, age 4-16. To get them all to even agree to go somewhere together is amazing enough...but for EACH of them to even have fun? It's just short of a miracle! 😊 My boyfriend and I really enjoyed it too! The museum was the one part of it that we couldn't all agree on...not everyone wanted to go in. But we all did, and we all were really pleased with both the museum itself and with the man running it. He was so nice and very knowledgeable about everything in the museum as well as Fort Worden, itself. So overall, it really was a fantastic day! We would...and probably will!... definitely go back!
This is a beautiful place to camp. They also have the officer quarters to rent. The people are very friendly and helpful. I go here to camp or stay and it's a treat. Also, you can't beat the proximity to Port Townsend. It can be part of a very romantic trip.
