Norwich Cathedral, Norwich

4.8
Built in the 12th century and still holding services, Norwich Cathedral is one of 12 heritage sites in the area. Enter the cathedral through one of the two historic gates: the Ethelbert gate or the original gated entrance. Inside, you'll see 61 misericords, small wooden shelves also known as "mercy seats," carved on the underside of the folding chairs. Several hundred of the over 1,000 bosses (raised ornamental decorations) are carved and painted with ornate delicacy. A free guided tour will fill you in on the highlights. Tours are given daily, so there is no need to book ahead. The cathedral is an important cultural meeting place, with regular exhibits in the Hostry Visitor and Education Center and live music at the refectory. • This is an absolutely beautiful cathedral. I really recommend a visit. My friend lives pretty much next door and just gave me an unofficial tour. There are so many original features and some, apparently quite rare, original paintwork. It's just beautiful and a wonderful, peaceful place to visit.
  • I have visited the cathedral several times and I would thoroughly recommend you do. An architectural dream and a place where prayer and contemplation is compelling. A place to feel drawn to god and the wonders of his work.
