The Charterhouse, London
Learn about the history of London at the architectural gem of The Charterhouse, a former Carthusian priory turned private mansion. Founded by Catholic monks in 1371 to bury victims of the plague, the complex fell victim to Henry VIII's brutal nationalization policy, which in 1537 dissolved all monasteries. In the 17th century, it converted into an almshouse. Today, the site provides an oasis of calm in the midst of the busy city. Take a self-guided tour of ornately decorated rooms, the chapel with elaborate wood carvings and a great hall, the old library, the cloister, and the meticulously kept courtyard. To take advantage of guided tours every second Saturday, book in advance. It's always a pleasure to visit this place. I think the all refurbishment has done credit to the whole building. It's well laid out and beautifully preserved. The art curators we've met on several occasions are unbelievably talented: they manage to bring to life these old stones full of hidden stories. It's a little jewel in central London and suitable for a nice family outing.
London hidden gem now more accessible to the public. Great area around it, good coffee shop alongside it, Poirot's Flat in Florin Court nearby and then there's the fascinating history and interior. Do go!
