Sumela Monastery, Trabzon

Lookout Ruin Must See
Visit the hidden gem of history and ecclesiastical art at Sumela Monastery, perched on a scenic cliff overlooking the Altindere Valley. Located inside Altindere Valley National Park at 1,200 m (3,900 ft), the Orthodox monastery dates back to the 4th century CE. The complex has been damaged and restored several times throughout its long history, but you can still admire its impressive frescoes, ornamentation, and exceptional architecture. The site is easily reachable from Trabzon via bus or taxi, or join one of the organized tours that take you there from the city. To get to the monastery itself you have to do a bit of hiking, so be sure to have appropriate footwear. • When we were here, the monastery itself was under restoration, but even to visit its surroundings is worth it. If you’re in Black Sea region of Turkey, you should visit Sumela monastery 100%!  more »
  • You can say one of the places to be seen in the Black Sea is very difficult to reach, but after reaching the view of the sight of the side of the small water flowing on the edge of the road to the next time to sit and go to a refreshing and continue to occur When you come out of the car and walk out of the car, you will benefit much more than the oxygen, we recommend you to have breakfast in the heleki with a strong tea, I recommend you to soak up the scent of history in the place

  • Wonderful place, but shame is closed for restoration, as is the path on the last 300m approach on foot. Still, a beautiful walk up the road, then onto a steep track through the woods to a chapel nearby. There's a multimedia film showing you inside the monastery and giving some history. You can also take photos from this nearest view point. Bitter sweet since you just want to go up and into this amazing place. How DID they manage to build it!?!
  • Sumela monastery has been closed for many years for some construction issues. There is a 1.2 km path but it is closed as well. There can be reached for a nice view of monastery by car but also that road is closed to cars, by walking it takes 30 minutes. There is a local food restaurant around parking area with voice of birds and creek among full of nature.
