Suleymaniye Cami , Istanbul
Witness the work of famed Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan at , a majestic religious structure that dominates the Golden Horn and shares similarities with Hagia Sophia. This mosque was commissioned by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent in 1550 and completed seven years later. Though it may be less ornate than other elaborate religious structures in the city, the mosque's Byzantine influence has gained it recognition for its blend of architectural styles. Having experienced damage from natural disasters and wars over the centuries, the building is fully restored and now one of the most popular attractions in Istanbul. Regular mosque. Just a big one. Nothing special but the ancient cemetery with nice tombstones and bunch of beautiful cats! more »
This was a wonderful experience. The building is the representation of the exuberance and luxury of the Otoman empire. Every tile, every decoration was impressive. We were allowed to stay there for the time we wanted. However, the doors on both sides were open and it was really really cold. As you have to take off your shoes for the visit, you want to leave promptly. I am not sure if they did it on purpose but, it worked. The tourist flow fast.
I would give 6 stars if I could. This is by far the most beautiful mosque in Istanbul. In my life so far I have never seen a place as amazing and beautiful as this. You can see views of the entire city, and there is amazing food and restaurants on the other side. Great place to watch the sun set.
