Kaunos, Dalyan

4.6
Explore the ancient ruins of Kaunos, once an important sea port founded in the 9th century BCE between the empires Caria and Lycia. Because of manmade alterations to the landscape, the site no longer sits directly on the coast. You'll need to join a guided boat trip or board one of the private rowing boats in Dalyan that take you across the river and walk 20 minutes to the site. Walk along the remnants of city walls up to the acropolis perched on a 152 m (500 ft) high rock, which offers vistas of the ruins, the river, the bay, and the beach. A Hellenistic-Roman theater on the slope of the acropolis is still occasionally used for performances. See the gymnasium with its Roman baths, a wind-measuring platform, and a domed Byzantine basilica. Do not miss the floor mosaics next to the basilica. Wear sensible shoes, since you'll be doing lots of walking. Put Kaunos into our Dalyan road trip planning tool and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • The ancient city of Kaunos, the name of the ancient Carian Kingdom of Dalyan in the period. From the concrete pier by the Dalyan River, you will see the small boats walking down to the 400 m, with these for a small fee you can reach the other side of the river and take a 10-minute walk to the ancient city of Kaunos. If you have come in July and August, definitely do not visit in the afternoon. I would advise you to visit in the morning hours. Have a camera, comfortable walking shoes and water. Do not try to exit the castle is comfortable but the landing can be very slippery and risky. It will be enough to see the ruins of the theatre, Roman Bath, basilica and temple for a period of approximately 2 hours. To return to Dalyan, you need to walk back to the point where you come from the boat again.

  • It is very out of season at the moment. Loved the quiet and peaceful atmosphere of this time of year. The location is lovely and the atmosphere a feeling of historical presence. The world of yesterday is laid before your eyes. The sense of a great past brought to view by a simple stroll.
  • If you are passing near it is nice to stop to have one coffe in one of the villages coffee shops and then to visit Kaunos. Not something so special, just simple archaeological site.
