Kirkwall is the largest town and capital of the Orkney Islands of Scotland. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Kirkwall: Skara Brae (in Stromness), Brough Of Birsay (in Birsay) and Tomb of the Eagles (in South Ronaldsay). Next up on the itinerary: contemplate the long history of Saint Magnus Cathedral, delve into the distant past at Maeshowe, make a trip to Yesnaby Cliffs, and sample the fine beverages at Highland Park Distillery.

To see where to stay, maps, more things to do, and other tourist information, read Kirkwall sightseeing planner.

London to Kirkwall is an approximately 5.5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of train and bus; or do a combination of train and ferry. In August, Kirkwall is slightly colder than London - with highs of 19°C and lows of 11°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 22nd (Thu) early enough to travel back home.
