Colchester is an historic market town and the largest settlement within the borough of Colchester in the county of Essex. At the time of the census in 2011, it had a population of 121,859, marking a considerable rise from the previous census and with considerable development since 2001 and ongoing building plans; it has been named as one of Britain's fastest growing towns. Museum-lovers will appreciate Colchester Castle Museum and Combined Military Services Museum. Change things up with these side-trips from Colchester: Clacton Pier (in Clacton-on-Sea), Southend-on-Sea (Room Escape Games, Adventure Island, & more) and Audley End House and Gardens (in Saffron Walden). And it doesn't end there: learn about wildlife with up-close encounters at Colchester Zoo, shop like a local with Colchester Arts Centre, view the masterpieces at Sentinel Gallery, and explore the world behind art at Dedham Art & Craft Centre.
