The cultural, economic, and political center of the country, Vienna has developed from its early Celtic and Roman roots into a medieval and Baroque city, with an old town that was designated a World Heritage Site in 2001.
Visit Schonbrunn Palace and St. Stephen's Cathedral for their historical value. Museum-lovers will get to explore Belvedere Palace and Central Cemetery (Zentralfriedhof). You'll find plenty of places to visit near Vienna: Wachau Valley (in Joching) and Melk Abbey (in Melk). Give yourself a bit of retail therapy at Residenzgalerie Salzburg and Alte furst-erzbischofliche Hofapotheke. Museum-lovers will appreciate Fortress Hohensalzburg and Mozart Residence (Mozart Wohnhaus). Take a break from Salzburg with a short trip to Erlebnisburg Hohenwerfen in Werfen, about 42 minutes away. Next up on the itinerary: explore the historical opulence of Schloss Hellbrunn, see the interesting displays at Haus der Natur, explore the galleries of Mozarts Geburtshaus, and take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Untersberg.

Historically known for the production of salt, Halstatt's fine architecture reflects the small village's salt mining legacy.
Get a sense of the local culture at Old Town and Hallstatt Lutheran Church. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Hallstatt-Dachstein - Salzkammergut Cultural Landscape and Salzwelten. Take a break from Hallstatt with a short trip to Offentlicher Badeplatz Brauwiese in Traunkirchen, about 50 minutes away. There's still lots to do: stroll the grounds of Beinhaus, Karner, Ossuary, tour the pleasant surroundings at Badestrand Hallstatt, contemplate the waterfront views at Lake Attersee, and don't miss a visit to Hallstatt Skywalk "Welterbeblick".

Despite its small size, Zell am See is a well-visited tourist destination known mostly as a ski resort town, and it serves as an important transportation hub for the region.
Escape the urban bustle at Grossglockner High Alpine Road and Wildpark Assling. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Krimml Falls (Krimmler Wasserfalle) and Vitalpinum. Get out of town with these interesting Zell am See side-trips: Kitzsteinhorn (in Kaprun) and Kaserei Plangger (in Niederndorf).
