The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Get some historical perspective at Nijo-jo Castle and Kinkaku-ji. Get a sense of the local culture at Gion and Dotonbori. Get out of town with these interesting Kyoto side-trips: Osaka Castle (in Osaka) and Nara (Todai-ji Temple & Nara Park). There's lots more to do: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine, don't miss a visit to Mimizuka, steep yourself in history at Heian Shrine, and enjoy breathtaking views from Kyoto Tower.

With a long Pacific coastline, Nanjo offers fantastic views of the ocean from high cliffs covered with lush greenery, as well as from its long sandy beaches.
Do some cultural sightseeing at Shurijo Castle and Sefa-Utaki. Your itinerary includes some good beach time at Nirai Beach and Miibaru Beach. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Nanjo: Onna-son (Manza Beach & Cape Manzamo), Tropical Beach (in Ginowan) and Sunset Beach (in Chatan-cho).

A popular destination for Japanese tourists, Kumage-gun Yakushima-cho is a true paradise for nature lovers, with over 1,900 species and subspecies of plants.
