You might consider the city of Budapest, divided by the Danube River into two distinctive cities--Buda and Pest--to be essentially one large World Heritage Site.
Let the collections at House of Terror Museum and Hungarian National Gallery (Magyar Nemzeti Galeria) capture your imagination. Fisherman's Bastion and St. Stephen's Basilica (Szent Istvan Bazilika) are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Start off your visit on the 6th (Mon): take in the spiritual surroundings of St. Sava Temple (Hram Svetog Save), wander the streets of Skadarlija, then shop like a local with Knez Mihailova, and finally steep yourself in history at Kalemegdan.

Built on a desolate swamp as a showcase capital of Imperial Russia, this grand city has certainly lived up to the expectations of its founder, Tsar Peter the Great.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to The Museum Complex The State Museum St. Isaac’s Cathedral and Naval Cathedral of St. Nicholas. Get some historical perspective at Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood and Palace Square (Dvortsovaya Ploshchad). There's still lots to do: examine the collection at State Hermitage Museum and Winter Palace, admire the masterpieces at Peterhof Grand Palace, and contemplate the long history of The Marly Palace.
