The 2013 European "Capital of Culture," Marseille is the largest port city on the breezy Mediterranean coast and the second largest city in France.
Venture out of the city with trips to Route des Cretes (in La Ciotat), Kayaking & Canoeing (in Cassis) and Aix-en-Provence (Musee Granet & Paroisse Cathédrale Saint Sauveur Aix-en-Provence). There's much more to do: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde, take in the dramatic natural features at Calanques, take in the waterfront at Le Vieux Port, and tour the pleasant surroundings at Calanque de Samena.

An ancient town center surrounded by medieval ramparts, Avignon is a major city of Provence and a Mediterranean city in the Vaucluse department on the left bank of the Rhône River.
Kick off your visit on the 5th (Fri): steep yourself in history at Amphitheatre (les Arenes), then explore the world behind art at Carrieres des Lumieres, then snap pictures at Pont d'Avignon, and finally step into the grandiose world of Palais des Papes. Here are some ideas for day two: trek along Le Sentier des Ocres, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Abbaye Notre-Dame de Senanque, and then brush up on your knowledge of spirits at Distillerie A. Blachere.

You can take a train from Marseille to Avignon in an hour. Alternatively, you can take a bus; or drive. In July in Avignon, expect temperatures between 36°C during the day and 20°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 6th (Sat) early enough to drive to Castellane.

Castellane

Castellane is a commune in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department in southeastern France. Venture out of the city with trips to Entrevaux (Cathedrale Notre Dame de l'Assomption d`Entrevaux, Porte Royale, & more), Presbytère (in Puget Theniers) and Lac d'Allos (in Allos). There's still lots to do: explore the stunning scenery at Les Gorges du Verdon, make a trip to Chapelle Notre Dame du Roc, take a tour by water with Boat Tours & Water Sports, and shake up your sightseeing with a climbing tour.

July in Castellane sees daily highs of 37°C and lows of 20°C at night. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 9th (Tue) so you can go by car to Saint-Raphael.

Well-known for the beautiful views of its famous Promenade des Anglais waterfront, Nice is an ethnically-diverse coastal port city on the French Riviera and the fifth most populated city in France.
Step out of Nice to go to Villeneuve-Loubet and see Waterskiing & Jetskiing, which is approximately 36 minutes away. There's lots more to do: wander the streets of Vieille Ville, get up close and personal with brilliant marine life at Marineland, pause for some serene contemplation at Eglise St Pierre & Paul, and stroll the grounds of Cimetiere du Chateau.
