On the bank of the Mtkvari River and at the foot of Trialeti mountain range, Tbilisi's location has given the city strategic significance since it was founded in the 5th century.
You'll discover tucked-away gems like Ananuri Fortified Castle Ensemble and Sioni Church. Museum-lovers will appreciate Tsinandali Palace and Fotografia. Get out of town with these interesting Tbilisi side-trips: Mtskheta (Mtskheta Church of the Holy Cross, Jvari Church, & more) and David Gareja Monastery (in Udabno). And it doesn't end there: pause for some serene contemplation at Mtatsminda Pantheon, examine the collection at State Museum of Theatre, Music and Cinema, do a tasting at Karalashvili's Wine Cellar, and delve into the distant past at Narikala Fortress.

Johannesburg, South Africa to Tbilisi is an approximately 17-hour flight. The time zone changes from South Africa Standard Time to Georgia Time, which is usually a 2 hour difference. Traveling from Johannesburg in September, Tbilisi is a bit warmer at night with lows of 19°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 12th (Sat) early enough to travel to Mestia.

Mestia is a highland townlet in northwest Georgia, at an elevation of 1500m in the Caucasus Mountains.General informationMestia is located in the Svaneti region of Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti province, some 128km northeast of the regional capital of Zugdidi. Start off your visit on the 13th (Sun): fly down the slopes at Khatsvali Ski Resort, head outdoors with Chaladi Glacier, and then examine the collection at Svaneti Museum of History and Ethnography.

You can do a combination of taxi and flight from Tbilisi to Mestia in 2 hours. Other options are to drive; or take a bus. Having invested heavily in tourism since 2010, Batumi is quickly becoming a go-to destination for visitors looking for a bustling nightlife.
Holy Mother Virgins Nativity Cathedral and Batumi Boulevard will appeal to history buffs. Discover out-of-the-way places like Ethnographic Museum "Borjgalo" and Bridge Mahuntseti. There's still lots to do: pause for some serene contemplation at Church of St. Nicholas, walk around 6 May Park, examine the collection at Batumi Archeological Museum, and take in nature's colorful creations at Batumi Botanical Gardens.
