Nestled between mountains in inland Sri Lanka, Kandy proudly bears its World Heritage Site designation while remaining culturally independent and colorfully picturesque.
Visit Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and Kandy Garrison Cemetery for their historical value. Give yourself a bit of retail therapy at Jayamali Batiks Studio and Kandy City Center. When in Kandy, make a side trip to see Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage in Pinnawala, approximately 1h 15 min away. There's still lots to do: examine the collection at Ceylon Tea Museum, stroll the grounds of Commonwealth War Cemetery, surround yourself with nature on a nature and wildlife tour, and make a trip to Kandy view point.

New York City, USA to Kandy is an approximately 26-hour combination of bus, flight, and train. Due to the time zone difference, you'll lose 10 hours traveling from New York City to Kandy. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 27th (Wed) to allow time to drive to Sigiriya.

The historic rock of the same name dominates the landscape of World Heritage-listed Sigiriya, where the steep and striking lava plug contains the ruins of an ancient empire.
On the 27th (Wed), examine the collection at Sigiriya Museum and then make a trip to Sigiriya World Heritage Site. Here are some ideas for day two: identify plant and animal life at Hurulu Eco Park, then look for gifts at Karu Arts & Crafts, then Head underground at The Golden Temple, and finally examine the collection at Pethikada.
