Do some cultural sightseeing at Asakusa Shrine and Sensō-ji. Step off the beaten path and head to Zojoji Temple and Kanda Myojin. There's still lots to do: contemplate the long history of Nezu Shrine, take a stroll through Marunouchi, look for gifts at Ginza Itoya Hontren, and take in the spiritual surroundings of 上野東照宮 Toshogu Shrine.

Ishigaki, the most populous island in the chain, features the country's southernmost city and acts as a transport hub for exploring the landmasses that surround.
Kick off your visit on the 18th (Sat): enjoy the sand and surf at Kondoi Beach, enjoy breathtaking views from Tamatorizaki Observatory, and then head outdoors with Cape Hirakubozaki.

You can fly from Tokyo to Ishigaki in 5.5 hours. Traveling from Tokyo in January, you will find days in Ishigaki are a bit warmer (70°F), and nights are much warmer (62°F). Cap off your sightseeing on the 18th (Sat) early enough to travel to Miyakojima.

Miyakojima

A city jurisdiction formed after the merger of several towns in 2005, Miyakojima spans six linked-up islands.
On the 19th (Sun), stroll through Sunayama Beach, then snap pictures at Irabu Bridge, then snap pictures at Kurima Bridge, and finally stroll through Yonaha Maehama Beach. On the next day, see the vivid underwater world at Yabiji and then see some colorful creatures with a scuba or snorkeling tour.

Traveling by flight from Ishigaki to Miyakojima takes 2 hours. In January, daytime highs in Miyakojima are 69°F, while nighttime lows are 61°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 20th (Mon) early enough to travel to Ise.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
On the 22nd (Wed), contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine, and then take in the spiritual surroundings of Tofuku-ji Temple.
