A natural wonder and World Heritage Site, Ngorongoro Crater provides an oasis of life for a vast population of indigenous wildlife and the nomadic Maasai tribe. The rich terrain of this huge volcanic crater stretches some 260 sq km (100 sq mi) within a protected conservation area, ranking as one of the largest inactive calderas in the world. See endless vistas and the densely populated highlands of the crater, and observe wildebeest, zebras, and one of the largest known populations of Maasai lions. Vanaf de weg heb je een prachtig uitzicht op de krater. Dat er zich zoveel wild beneden bevindt, zie je pas als je naar beneden rijdt. Met een open jeep begeef je je tussen allerlei wilde dieren. We were about 2 metres away from the Lions. Very impressive. Although most animals from the crater, can they stay down. Elephants, rhinos, wild boars, wild asses, zebras, hyenas and various species of birds you can spot up close. The toilets are dirty, but this is a little something. Be on your guard if you are going to eat at the ' picnic area ', because the birds of prey are very brutal.
Just one of the most magical places on this earth, and a must see. Yes its awesome if you can afford one of the hotels on the edge over looking it, but there are plenty of good and cheap hotels in the towns surrounding it.
The road towards it is long and can take its toll but this is one of those places that is well worth the visit. Once in the crater you'll see vast amounts of wild animals wandering its plains. Not much luck is necessary to see lions, hyenas, buffaloes and a lot of small wild.
