Pamir Highway, Dushanbe

4.7
#1 of 9 in Outdoors in Tajikistan
Drive and hike along a high road, Pamir Highway, the second highest road in the world. Built by Soviet military engineers in 1931-1934, the road traverses the Roof of the World, passing through many scenic valleys, around lakes, and past ravines within rugged, snow-clad mountains. Shepherds, yurt dwellers, sellers at improvised open-air markets, yaks, and goats will be your companions. You'll need a permit from regional authorities to pass through, (often included in visa if you ask for it). Rent a four-wheel drive vehicle or hitch a ride on a Chinese truck. The road has become a popular adventure for die-hard cyclotourists. Plan your Pamir Highway visit and explore what else you can see and do in Dushanbe using our Dushanbe tour builder app .
