The Matterhorn, Zermatt

#1 of 232 in Parks in Swiss Alps
King of the Swiss Alps, the colossal The Matterhorn rises above the picturesque resort town of Zermatt, on the border between Switzerland and Italy. The mountain's summit is 4,478 m (14,692 ft) high, its four steep faces soaring above the surrounding glaciers and facing the four points of the compass. First ascended in 1865 by a team of alpinists led by English mountaineer Edward Whymper, the pyramid-shaped mountain continues to draw ambitious climbers from around the globe. Less audacious visitors can still access sweeping views of the scenery by taking an aerial cable car departing from Zermatt up to a dizzying height of about 3,800 m (12,500 ft). With our international travel planner, Zermatt attractions like The Matterhorn can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • Many places to ski and site see. I recommend downloading the app to make it easier to navigate and plan. Even if you are not a skier, you still need to come and see the gorgeous mountains. During the winter you can do it in sneakers but I would recommend boots. Don't forget your sunglasses.
  • I got lucky when the sky cleared up in the morning of April 2nd. You need to get up there early if you want to see it because it disappeared in the afternoon. Way better than Jungfrau in my opinion
