Basel Minster, Basel

#1 of 153 in Things to do in Basel
Situated on a hill above the Rhine River, the medieval Basel Minster remains one of the city's major landmarks, its duo of slim towers a dominant feature in the Old Town's skyline. Erected gradually between 1019 and 1500, the building combines the finest elements of the Romanesque and Gothic styles, its colored roof tiles visible from distant corners of the city. Inside you can see a 19th-century lectern carved out of sandstone and a crypt containing the tombs of Basel's early bishops. For a bird's-eye view of the city, the river, and the Black Forest in the distance, climb the church's southern tower. • In the autumn of 1019, the Basel Minster was opened. Today marks 1,000 years ago. The festivities go through all year round, be it in church festivals on Friday evening at 10pm, be it with extraordinary organ concerts, be it with solemn services, be it with surprising guided tours, ... And much more. Walk right past und/or look in the daily press. Be surprised and let the daily program change. > > Over the portal sits St. Martin up to Ross, who shares the coat, and also shares the joy that you are here. > > > And behind the Minster, on the Palatinate, you will be given an unforgettable view over the Rhine into the Rhine Plain (Alsace/Black Forest) free of charge. It would be a real shame, you wouldn't be there. You would then have to wait until the year again ...

  • Fun to travel and look to a great river it's best to visit and just close to the center and not come with a high-quality and not worth coming in with a car.

  • Beautiful old church! The entrance is a small dark passage but once inside the vast spaces are inviting and enthralling. I was there for an organ recital on a Saturday afternoon. The sound was magnificent. The acoustics are great--the best seats (for sound and view) for that are behind the pulpit/podium area. The staff were gracious and kind. Be sure to see the crypt area under the church--fascinating!
  • A very important landmark in Basel with rich European religious, social and political history. The external and internal architecture are amazing. The stained glass windows are spectacular in colour and details. The reverent atmosphere, the tall ceilings and many details speak volumes of a time now gone in religious devotion. The view of the City of Basel and the Rhein from the highest point of the tower, which can be reached climbing three sets of stairs, is absolutely fantastic. The Basel Cathedral is definitely a must when visiting Basel.
