Gotska Sandön is an uninhabited Swedish island, since 1909 also a national park, situated 38km north of Fårö in the Baltic Sea. Legally a part of Gotland province, it is approximately 9km long and 6km wide, with a total area of approximately 36sqkm. The island consists mostly of sand and is dominated by beaches, dunes and especially pine forests. Aside from a colony of grey seals, the higher fauna is not very rich. Terrestrial or aerial mammals contain bats and mountain hares. However, the island is home to many rare insects and plants, including the Kashubian vetch and several species of orchid. During the summer, there are regular boat tours from Fårö Island and Nynäshamn on the mainland.
Despite its isolation from sizeable landmasses, Gotska Sandön's oceanic climate is warm for its latitude. The Scandinavian Peninsula to the west contributes to warmer summers and frequent winter frost, giving the island a far broader temperature range than, for example, the similarly isolated Fair Isle, which lies one degree further north some distance off the coast of Scotland. In spite of this range, summer highs are cool by the standards of southern Sweden, and winter nights are among the mildest in the country.

  • This is a favourite of mine. A truly magic island, unique in the Baltics. Very interesting nature. if you enjoy nature this is the place to go. Do not expect any resorts though. Simple accomodations a...  more »
  • We took the boat from nynäshamn. Came to the island after a wavy overpass. Were met by staff who work on the island. All baggage is running with the tractor out to the campsite. We camped at the designated locations. Cooking in the fully equipped kitchen apart from cooling. Tips include electric cool box. Option is root cellar, where you can set up your chilled foods. Waste sorting and composting-very good o well maintained. Good quality of water. There were lockers to charge by phone. Showers with cold water but remember to bring your bathing suit so you can dive in the sea. ... and a wonderful wonderful place. Take your time, wander around, stop. Enjoy the silence! We will be back!

  • Heavenly. I was there in 1991 or 92/93 I forget. I signed the guestbook. Love , peace and Harmony. What a gorgeous place to rest and relax. Unforgettable !!
  • Magical beaches and nice scenery. It is quite a long way to wander around the island and we walked two miles in a day. Recommend renting one of the houses on the island because one day is too short to experience everything.
