Explore a collection of over 50 military aircraft at Flygvapenmuseum, and delve into complementary exhibits of engines, instruments, uniforms, literature, and photographs. The museum opened in 1984 on the former training field of the country's first flying school, which was opened by Sweden's first aviator Carl Cederström in 1912. Home to the sole surviving Junkers Ju 86 and a renowned DC-3 shot down in 1952, the museum also exhibits pioneer equipment in aviation such as an SK 1 Albatros, M 1 Nieuport, and B 1 Bréguet. The museum spans three levels with a small outdoor exhibit. On the upper level, learn firsthand about the modern JAS 39 Gripen, a single-engine multirole fighter aircraft, via flight simulators. If you are a modern History enthusiast, this is the right place for you for visiting on a weekend. The plight of Sweden in terms of technology and looming dangers during the two World Wars and the Cold War is highlighted well and how Sweden tried hard to equip and upgrade it's air force is depicted well. There is aplenty focus on the 'Catalina Affair'. They have tried their best to provide English translations. While I didn't get a chance to try it, they also have a free audio guide. The science lab is good enough to engage the kids but isn't big enough in case there are aplenty visitors. The collection isn't extensive, the planes stringed to the ceiling(to save space?) are difficult to identify. Often, I couldn't map the information about a plane to the actual specimen hanging from the ceiling. I was told that the flight simulator is completely booked for the day but later on there was no one visiting the simulator! The restaurant is good enough only for survival - the food was a bit less in quantity. Overall, it's a worthwhile experience and the staff deserves a applause for this.
Worldclass museum! All the reviewers had been right! Just something you don’t expect to see in the middle of a country. The planes collection is not huge but very nice and interesting (just right to keep an average visitor very interested) and yet it contains some rare pieces. The history section on Cold War is amazing. And the interactive section kept busy both kids and parents :). And the canteen is really tasty
