Sightseers and history buffs will find plenty to admire in Jodensavanne, a historical migrant community established by persecuted Jews fleeing Spain in the early 15th century. With the entire community uprooting to the nation's capital of Paramaribo, the town's synagogue is still maintained annually by a small dedicated group of Jewish-Surinamese people. Take a guided tour for a personal touch as well as an excellent glimpse into the very beginnings of Suriname's Jewish community; many guides are the knowledgeable descendants of the original immigrants. Some flat Jewish tombstones in the jungle. I was disappointed, especially since there was hardly any good information. I met there Marina da Costa and heard her explanation. "I have to have that!" I figured out right away. This year January 2019, Marina da Costa has been devoted all day long to guide me and my son. It was gewéldig! A totally different experience, so much knowledge she shared with us! Our family has "roots" in Suriname and there are also headstones of our family. Marina showed us how her mother had discovered with a trick that you could read the hard-to-read letters now anyway good. The knowledge and engagement of Marina is very large and we are thankful that she has guided us. They pampered us in the meantime with nice drinks, coffee or fruit juice and tasty snacks. I no longer go into the details of the Jews savannah that is known or can read you, but the best is a tour of Marina da Costa. Then the whole life goes, especially if you love history.
