Skocjan Caves, Skocjan

Explore the largest known underground canyon in the world at Skocjan Caves, a World Heritage Site famous for its many waterfalls, diverse stalactite formations, and limestone pools. The caves feature 6 km (3.7 mi) of underground passages and one of the largest underground halls. With a total depth of over 200 m (656 ft), this system of limestone caves was inhabited as early as Mesolithic times. On your way through, you will pass a 116 m (380 ft) long tunnel, a dry river bed, a so-called "silent cave" and "murmuring cave." Look out for the huge stalagmites called the Giants and the Organ. The highlight of the trip is crossing over a 45 m (148 ft) high bridge. Bring a light jacket and put on good walking shoes since the paths can be slippery. • Caves very different from those of Postojna, much more crude. One of my favorite places in Slovenia is the amazement when you find yourself inside. Absolutely, because we will remember!

  • We came to the site as a solution for a rainy day trip, which turned out to be an excellent idea. The entrance to the site is only accompanied and guided, in order to pay attention to the hours, so as not to wait for us about an hour and a half. The purchase of the tickets was quite lazy, even though we arrived at 2, and then a tour, we had to wait for the opening of the registers again, to be seated and sat one cashier... Children pay since the age of 6, and half an adult. The waiting area is well-kept, shaded and covered, there's a restaurant on the grounds, but we didn't. The hike to the tunnel is a few hundred meters, in a steep decline but even in the pouring rain it was reasonable, though slightly muddy and slightly slipping. In the opening of the cave we divided into Italian, Slovenian, and two groups of speakers...

  • Incredible cave system. Absolutely worth a visit. Bigger than I could imagine, informative guides and smallish groups (50 people in each) so you could hear. No photos allowed inside but worth it. Lord of the Rings stuff and just amazing.
  • Wow, stunning caves. Highly recommended visit to these world famous caves. The level of care that has gone into the tourist areas is very high and there is a lift available to descend into the cave. Easy paths throughout and stunning views from the various bridges. If you enjoy caves, this one is unbeatable.
