Ptuj Castle (Ptujski Grad), Ptuj

4.4
Rising on a hill along the riverbank and overlooking the town, Ptuj Castle (Ptujski Grad) houses a museum that exhibits art, furniture, costumes, tapestries, and everyday objects from the 16th to the 19th centuries. In the western forecourt, notice the tower--the only remaining part of the first fortification most likely built in the 9th century. Archbishop Konrad of Salzburg commissioned the construction of a new castle in the 12th century, but the structure gained its final appearance in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Explore the collection of musical instruments used by noblemen and wealthy citizens on the ground floor, and head to the second floor to see traditional masquerade costumes on display. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Ptuj holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Ptuj Castle (Ptujski Grad) and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • Wonderful Castle and spectacular view of City. No entrance fee to enter and walk around, but entrance fee (6 eur/person) for Museum.  more »
  • The castle is more extensive than most in the area. On all three floors, many exhibits. Paintings, musical instruments, old weapons, furniture, etc. All well furnished and explained. In the basement there is a wine barrel with a good 40,000 liters. If you want to visit it, you have to say it right at the checkout. The museum keepers don't have a key (by their own admission). The €6€ entry is justified because you see something for your money. The views over the city and the river are magnificent-azch in bad weather.

  • Beautiful castle with lots of historical contents and events. Nice views of Ptuj and surroundings. Beautiful old town - Ptuj. The castle is very worth exploring even if you are a regular spa-tourist, not a history buff. You can take a nice 30-minute walk along the spa, over a footbridge and through old town. With breaks for food and drinks every couple of hundred meters available.
  • If you are visiting Ptuj and have spare time, you should visit castle. My favorite exhibition is one about Carnival time in Ptuj and surrounding villages and towns. Also exhibition about living in Ptuj is nice to see.
