The Maribor Water Tower is a medieval fortified tower in the city of Maribor, Slovenia. The late-Renaissance tower stands directly abuts the Drava River and dates from 1555. It is of pentagonal form and consists of massive stone blocks interspersed with embrasures. It was built to secure the southeast part of the Maribor city walls from the direction of the river.HistoryBefore the mid-16th century, the southern part of the Maribor city walls was guarded by two round defensive towers, the predecessor of the current Jewish Tower and the predecessor of the Water Tower, known as the Gunpowder Tower (Smodniški stolp), mentioned as of 1529. Around 1555, a decision was made to extend the city's defensive fortifications against Turkish raids to include the municipal port. Italian master builders erected two bastions on the Drava, a tower that came to be known as Mariborske Benetke ("Mariborian Venice") to the west and the Water Tower to the east. The city gates once stood between Benetke Tower and the Judgement Tower.A site called Pristan ("quay") or Lent had earlier developed outside the walls, serving as the mercantile center of old Maribor. Until the construction of the Carinthian railway between Maribor and Klagenfurt in 1863, the Benetke port building saw annual eastward-bound traffic of up to 800 šajke (characteristic local barges) and 1200 rafts.

  • Watchtower near the River Drava as you walk along the Drava River you can in one direction see the world's oldest vine which is also 400 years old. Go in the opposite direction, you will soon get to the water tower. It is built of massive boulders because the intention was to secure the southeastern part of Maribor along with the so-called Jewish tower. This freestanding tower of the Renaissance stands quite close to the river Drava is almost 500 years old (1555). Today you can buy wine from Slovenia of high quality, in the oldest wine cellar in Slovenia. On the ground floor there is a shop, upstairs there was a medieval banquet hall, fully dedicated to wine tasting and a bar outside (during the summer season). When it is open. You can sit down and take it easy or feed the swans and ducks.

  • Visiting Maribor, we stopped in this café to enjoy a beautiful view by the river, in the shade and quiet of the center, I recommend if you want tranquility, no complaints except that the server lacks organization.

  • Maribor is a very nice city. There are not too many tourists. prices are reasonable and people are friendly. It is very refreshing to be away from tourist dumps like Paris or Vienna where tens of thousands of people follow aimlessly a guide holding on umbrella.
  • We enjoyed a nice view and a cold drink while on our way to Ljubljana. Nice staff and a good spot to stretch your legs on a short walk.
