Cotton Tree, Freetown

Admire the wide canopy of Cotton Tree, a kapok tree that symbolizes this town settled by freed U.S. slaves. The tree witnessed the establishment of Sierra Leone's capital by the British using African labor force in the late 18th century. British Black Loyalists, who had earned their freedom quelling the secessionists during the American war of independence, revered the tree and said their prayers of thanks for liberation. The tradition continues today, with locals leaving offerings in honor of their ancestors at the tree. • The site is historical, when slaves that were freed after fighting the American Independence war landed in Freetown, they gathered under the biggest tree they could find and gave thanks to God for their freedom. It has been standing since 1787, its arguably the oldest tree in the world. People still pray under the tree till date.
  • The cotton tree is listed as one of the core tourist attractions and is said to be a historic symbol of Freetown, the capital city of Sierra Leone. I think there should be more attention on keeping this area clean and free from heavy pee and foul odor.
