Ganina Yama Monastery, Yekaterinburg

Ganina Yama Monastery stands on the site where the bodies of the last Russian tsar and his family were thrown after their execution by the Bolsheviks. The remains of Nicholas II of Russia and his family remained undiscovered for many years because the Bolsheviks quickly transferred them to a second, secret site, known as Porosenkov Ravine. DNA from living relatives identified the remains as those of the tsar and his family, but the Russian Orthodox Church doubted the validity of the results. Declaring the site holy ground, a monastery was constructed to commemorate the deaths of these political martyrs. Seven wooden chapels now stand on the site, one for each family member killed. Examine the display of photographs to better grasp the personal side of this national tragedy. For travelers who use our custom trip planner, Yekaterinburg holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Ganina Yama Monastery and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • We arrived in the evening. People a little. There was an evening service. The area is groomed with beautiful temples. Fresh forest air. There is a place to sit and reflect on the information heard. In a refectory it is possible to have a tasty meal and to drink tea. Visiting this place is recommended not only to believers. You will not regret it!
