Vologda Oblast

4.2
One of the largest regions of the European part of Russia, Vologda Oblast is a land of white nights, blue lakes, slow-flowing rivers, medieval towns, monasteries, and the ancient crafts of tinplate frosting and birch-bark carving. The region owes its charm to the unusual proximity of wildlife to cultural monuments, most of which are associated with the biggest names of Russian history, such as Ivan the Terrible and Peter the Great. One way to tour the region is a water itinerary that passes along 14th-century monasteries through nature reserves and timbered sluices built in the 19th century. Vologda's ethnographic tours introduce visitors to the traditions and history of Russian villages. Fifteen cities of the region preserve striking architectural complexes, which provide numerous sightseeing opportunities. Among other interesting places to visit are Cherepovets, "the port of five seas," and the scenic island of Kizhi, with its stunning wooden architecture. Vologda Oblast is in Northwestern District.
