Smolensk Fortress, Smolensk

One of the most important of Russia's defensive fortifications in its western regions, Smolensk Fortress boasts a multitude of imposing towers and sturdy walls. Visit the fortress, finished in 1602 on orders of Russia's leaders, and get an up-close look at the surviving portions of the original 6.5 km (4 mi) of walls. In addition to the walls, 17 of the defense towers have also endured the centuries, best represented by the fully restored Gromovaya tower. Note that several of the towers represent slightly different architectural styles, from those with cylindrical bases to those built with squared, angular sides. You can view parts of the bastion, but keep in mind that some areas may be inaccessible due to years of neglect during the Soviet era. • Impressive. The most powerful fortification structure. The beginning of the 17th century. The first "federal construction"-built the whole country, was even introduced a special tax handed bricks or their equivalent. The condition, to put it mildly, leaves much to be desired. The restoration of the year 2013 (to the 1150 anniversary of Smolensk) is clearly unsuccessful. Now, unfortunately, all entrances to the wall are closed. You can only walk around. But this, being in Smolensk, it is necessary to make obligatory.

  • The Smolensk Kremlin impresses with its size. The fortress wall passes through the whole center of the city, inside it administrative buildings, quarters of the multi-storey, avenues, streets, there is even a private sector. Given that the city was formerly inside the Kremlin, Smolensk was some kind of metropolis. The wall, though with tears, but in good condition.

  • The wall can only be viewed from the outside. Access is almost everywhere closed. No one is going to repair.

  • Grandiose monument to the feat of the Russian people, merchant who built Smolensk Fortress (architect Fyodor Steed), which spares neither time nor descendants.
