Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow

4.5
#8 of 543 in Museums in Moscow
Moscow's largest museum of Western art, Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts holds one of the most significant collections of Impressionist and post-Impressionist works in the world. Opened in 1912, this institution also displays Renaissance masterpieces, notably works by Botticelli, Tiepolo, Veronese, and Rembrandt. An exhibit dedicated to ancient civilizations, a major draw for history buffs, contains examples of Egyptian ritual items, sarcophagi, jewelry, and weapons. Pay special attention to the displays featuring 2000-year-old artifacts from the purported site of ancient Troy, excavated in the 1870s by German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann. Pick up an audio guide at the info desk in front of the museum shop. • The Pushkin has a solid, if qualitatively modest, collection of paintings by international standards. Add to that a good Egyptian department. Other ancient cultures are also represented, but without any interesting exhibits. One thing should be known: The Pushkin Museum is primarily a large cast collection, because the plaster casts of important works of art from all over the world occupy the largest space in the exhibition space. That's nice to look at, but it doesn't meet my expectations for a famous museum like this. Conclusion: If you really want to have seen the ultimately unspectacular "treasure of the priamos," you can't get around a visit to the museum. Anyone who has already visited some of the most important art collections in the world will not be impressed by the Pushkin and can save the two to three hours in principle.

  • I honestly did not expect to see 80% of all of the world famous statues I know within half an hour, since I didn’t not do a proper research and just went on my own. That completely caught me off guard. I would highly recommend getting the combo ticket for both the main building and the modern art building, if you are interesting in both ancient arts/relics and modern arts.
  • Such a wonderful museum. Loved it! Easy to get around , cameras allowed (no flash). Not too big so a day would suffice. They have a nice cafe and easy access to the WCs. Something for everyone. Did not go to the impressionist museum next door , but that is another day 🎨
