Kul Sharif Mosque, Kazan

4.8
Named after a Tatar imam who died defending Kazan from the armies of Ivan the Terrible, Kul Sharif Mosque remains most famous for its observation balcony and dome, designed to resemble a lotus flower. Completed in 2005, this lavish building stands on the remains of a 16th-century structure, once the biggest mosque in Russia. Part of the city's World Heritage-listed citadel, the mosque houses a museum dedicated to the history of Islam in Tatarstan. Keep in mind that according to Islamic tradition, only men can enter the ground-floor prayer hall, and women must keep their hair covered in all parts of the mosque. Visitors to the third-floor observation balcony do not need to remove their shoes. • Having read the reviews I am strangely to hear the comparison of this mosque with such expensive billions of projects as the mosque in Abu Dhabi or the historical mosques of Istanbul. To me so the mosque is very beautiful and looks very majestic. The mosque is functioning, so there is a time when the mosque is closed to tourists. We were in the evening, and inside the mosque you can get to 19:00. The mosque though not historical but to visit it costs.

  • There is no problem with the entrance to the mosque. All the necessary will be issued at the entrance (women-scarves, men-cloth cover the knees)

  • The mosque is situated inside the Kazan Kremlin, in the center of the city. One of the most picturesque places in the Kazan city. Full of historical value. Can visit inside. The architecture and the interior design is very unique and beautiful. Is one of the largest mosques in Europe. Not a big rush to get in. Always the territory is free to walk and take pictures. Day and night no difference, the place is very beautiful. Just next to the mosque there is the seven storied building of soyembika.
  • It is one of the largest mosques in the world and is a magnificent structure. Kul Sharif is a symbol of the secular attitude of Russians and how people of different faiths live in harmony. People of all faiths are allowed to enter the mosque as long as they are modestly dressed. Women need to cover their head to enter. Entrance is free. You can climb up the top floor to get a great view of the structure.
