Kurshskaya Kosa, Kaliningrad

#1 of 655 in Nature in Russia
For a chance to walk through the desert, swim in the sea, and cycle through the forest in a single day, head to Kurshskaya Kosa, a World Heritage Site. Formed thousands of years ago, this 98 km (60 mi) long sandspit separates a narrow lagoon from the Baltic Sea. Shared by Russia and Lithuania, the curving stretch of sand varies in width from a minimum of 400 m (1,300 ft) to almost 4 km (2.5 mi). Home to some of the most rapidly moving dunes in Europe, the spit combines sand ridges with wetlands, meadows, and tree groves. To explore the entire spit quickly and comfortably, drive the single paved road from Zelenogradsk in the south to Smiltyne in the north. • The Kursh spit always fascinates me. Extraordinary nature and it is hard to believe that many years ago there was only sand and thanks to human contribution and desire we now have this beautiful corner of nature. A narrow strip between the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Kursh. In summer it is pleasant to sunbathe on wide and clean beaches. In autumn, you can quietly hunt for mushrooms. On Kursh Kos you can meet and fox and wild boars, who like to roam along the road and near settlements. And I love the "By the Road" restaurant. Business card: King's ear with fish pie with red caviar. Recommend. And to cover the beauty with your eyes, climb the Efa Dune. From there there is a beautiful view of the sea and the bay, and between them another sea: green of trees. Have a good rest for everyone.
