Trip Planner: Europe / Romania / Transylvania / Central Romania / Brasov County / Zarnesti / Libearty Bear Sanctuary Zarnesti
Watch the bears feed on forest plants, climb trees, and swim in pools at Libearty Bear Sanctuary Zarnesti, which shelters over 70 animals who've been rescued from illegal exploitation. The story of the sanctuary started in 1998 when its founder, Cristina Lapis, saw three bears caged outside a restaurant who were being used to amuse customers. The habitat of oak and hazel forest allows the bears to stay hidden in the bushes, except in the morning when they come near the fence to be fed. The sanctuary is also home to a she-wolf that was born in a zoo and rejected by her own pack. Watch a short clip explaining how the sanctuary was built before going to see its furry residents. Put Libearty Bear Sanctuary Zarnesti into our Zarnesti road trip planning app and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

Libearty Bear Sanctuary Zarnesti Reviews

It is a wonderful place to visit if you like animals. All the animals are rescued after being treated poorly and some stories are very emotional. more »
Great location! We where unable to take the tour, children under 5 years of age cannot access the site, therefore we had to postpone our visit. Read the official site warnings and rules carefully before you go there, obey them and you will have a great time!
This is a must-see in the area. Tours are organized in the mornings, when the bears are being fed and come out close to the fence. Better to go with the earlier tours, better chances of seeing more bears before they eat and go back in the forest. There are 99 saved bears and it's heartbreaking hearing the stories of their lives in captivity. The organization in charge of the sanctuary is so dedicated and does an amazing job at taking care of them and saving their lives. If you're lucky, you can even catch them taking a nap in the trees.
