Castelo dos Mouros, Sintra

4.5
A symbol of Islamic presence in the area, the medieval Castelo dos Mouros has served as protection for several groups throughout history. Visiting this World Heritage Site atop a mountainous cliff, you'll have great views of Sintra. This castle was built in the eighth or ninth century to defend the agricultural region and its people. In 1147, the castle surrendered to Christian forces after the conquest of Lisbon. The castle was used as a watchtower and military fortification, and was restored by Ferdinand II based on the Romantic style popular at the time. You can tour this irregular structure, which features a double belt of walls, internal cistern, and royal tower. • The ruins of Moorish era here. A must for anyone who likes and knows history. This is part of a day trip from Lisbon.  more »
  • We were amazed by this majestic construction of the Arabian conquest of Portugal, located on the top of the mountain in Sintra, near Lisbon. The spirit of the Middle Ages, albeit partially suppressed by past years, remained here till our time. Although the weather on the day of the visit we were not very pleased, we were still able to enjoy the breathtaking views from the walls of the former fortress. A must visit.

  • Fantastic historical castle. Well worth the €8 entrance fee to walk around the walls and the views from the top are amazing. Personally think this is better than the palace which had a 2 hour queue. There are plenty of beautiful trails to reach the entrance points so no need to drive
  • This was hands down the coolest place I have ever been. An amazing scenic woodland walk brings you up to and through the gates of this castle, where you can then explore the grounds and ramparts. I was told it was often cloudy but the day we were there you could see for miles in all directions. It is also very windy and a bit cooler than the surrounding areas so I would recommend dressing accordingly.
