  • The caves of São Vicente formed from a volcanic eruption 890,000 years ago. Descending to the sea, the outside was exposed to lower temperatures that solidified quickly, while inside the lava continued to run, forming a series of lava tubes that constitute the caves of São Vicente, where it is possible to walk on They. This set of eight volcanic tunnels presents a total development of more than 1000 meters in length, whose maximum height varies between 5 and 6 meters and is the largest known in Madeira Island. The marks left by the volcanic activity of the last eruptive period extinguished for millennia, where the molten lava reached the temperature of 1200 º C, can be found over approximately 700 meters of underground route that resulted from the excavation to give Access to the various natural channels that constitute the 1000 meters.

  • We found the caves interesting and liked the 3D cinema experience. Children (4-10) found the film explaining the formation of the island boring as it was in Portuguese and they weren't able to keep up...  more »
  • The price for the tour is very reasonable. At the start the waiting area is at the entrance to the caves and it does tend to rain inside so coats initially are a good idea. The tour is in English and Portuguese. I would highly recommend this part. The second part is the museum and video section. Personally I found this was very basic and not designed for adults so I would recommend skipping this part.
  • Went to the caves on the yellow bus tour €25 for bus and entry to the caves. Excellent commentary by the tour guides on the bus and in the caves. Stopped in Sao Vicente village and a waterfall on way back. Good value for 4 hour round trip.
