Panteao Nacional, Lisbon

4.4
Designed to resemble St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, Panteao Nacional stands both as a home to the tombs of many notable Portuguese figures and as one of the capital city's most recognizable symbols. Though it took nearly three centuries to complete, the church retains its 17th-century architecture. Its ornate Baroque facade and white dome rise above the city. Enter the basilica to explore the halls with their different coats of arms and statues. Keep your eyes open for the graves of famous figures, including former presidents, writers, singers, and Humberto Delgado--a presidential candidate who once ran against then-dictator Antonio Salazar. You'll find several memorials to legendary native explorers Vasco da Gama and Henry the Navigator, among others. Afterward, ascend the basilica dome for a view of the sea and Lisbon. • We stayed in an apartment a couple of minutes away from the Panteao Nacional and so a visit was imminent. The outside is stunning but the inside is even better. Unmissable  more »
  • The building is beautiful. The view from here is beautiful. There are popular local personalities buried here.  more »

  • Beautiful building. Used to be a church at one time but, now a monument. A place to remember well known people long gone by. Beautiful interior. Easy to spend time appreciating what's there to see and read and contemplate. I liked being here as much as I did being in the Cathedral and the Monastery, each beautiful, architectural and historical buildings. Reasonable entrance fees. Come here to know and understand Portugal.
  • Fantastic monument to some very influential people in Portugal. Very grounding experience as you walk into the space. It used to be a former church and was transformed. You can get up pretty high in the museum, definitely worth visiting each level. There is also passageway to the rooftop which has pretty fantastic views of Lisbon! Put it in your list to visit if you have the chance, tickets were very manageable and we're about 6euro I believe
