The Barbican (Barbakan), Krakow

4.2
Learn the history of the city's defensive walls at The Barbican (Barbakan), a historical gateway leading into the Old Town. The circular fortress with an inner courtyard and seven turrets was added to the city's fortifications along the coronation route in the late 15th century. Look for a tablet on its eastern wall commemorating the feat of a local burgher who defended the city by shooting a Russian commander with a coat button. Notice forwarded balconies with floor hatches that were used to pour melted lead, boiling oil, or to throw projectiles. Now the fortification hosts medieval pageants, jousting contests, summer concerts, and theater performances. • From the train station in Krakow, this Barbakan is the first building you will see when you head to the old town. It is a fortress which kept the old town from the foreign enemy, but there is no more left. There are only three fortress in Europe including this Barbakan.

  • Amazing medieval defensive structure! Great reminder of the turbulent city history! Definitely worth visiting!
  • This is a beautiful historic gateway and fortification from 14th century and it was the first place we saw while visiting Krakow old town because called our attention the huge walls in brick style. The gate has a tower really beautiful in details. We just walked around the huge walls and we saw the entrance since we wouldn’t have time to visit inside, but you can find easily the prices and about the exhibitions that you can find inside on their official website and looks like you can even book in advance. Eli: 4 / Serge: 4 Recommended: Yes, it’s a beautiful place to visit around and if you have time should be worth to visit inside.
