La Savane des Esclaves, Trois-Ilets

4.5
Experience a recreated "slave village" at La Savane des Esclaves. The settlement was created in 2000 by Gilbert Larose, a local who wanted to showcase the lives of his ancestors--plantation workers who fled to freedom and lived off the land. You'll step back in time as you explore this replica 19th-century village, where each structure is dedicated to a traditional local custom. In addition to traditional huts and artifacts, look for an old-fashioned Creole garden, which is tended without fertilizer or pesticide and is filled with herbs, medicinal plants, and fruit. Put La Savane des Esclaves and other Trois-Ilets attractions into our Trois-Ilets visit site , and watch your holiday take shape.

  • We toured this place with our 17-year-old and chose the guided tour. Great good has done us a lot. We all, as teenagers included, had a very good time: pleasant but above all rewarding. Our friendly guide was dynamic and caught the attention of our group of 7 visitors without interruption for a little over an hour. The visit is well built and introduces us to the history of Martinique (indigenous Indians before the arrival of Europeans, the triangular trade, the condition of slaves during slavery, the life of former slaves after the abolition of slavery, the arrival of other populations...) as well as the medicinal plants found on the island. The reconstruction of the boxes and the presence of the plants illustrate concretely the whole discourse. We recommend it! Pictured: a map of Doliprane, one of the medicinal plants presented

  • 1 year we live here and we had not yet taken the time to visit the site and frankly, it is just a must to know and understand the history of Martinique. The explanations are simple ... not to annoy children and teens and site beautifully arranged !!! To do without hesitation

  • Great time with a local guide and museum made by local. Very impressive and enough for family, especially children.
  • A short drive from the tourist town and you get to this really nice hill side expo. The path winds through the hill and on display on almost 1:1 scale are recreations of dwellings during Martiniques slave era and to the aboriginal people's before the colonials arrived. It is a guided tour and they offer a lot of information about life, culture, medicine and plant life. An important stop to understand Martiniques past.
