Museo dell'Ara Pacis, Rome

#17 of 160 in Museums in Rome
See a 2,000-year-old altar and learn how it was found, discovered, and excavated at Museo dell'Ara Pacis. Constructed in 13 BCE in honor of Augustus’ return from the provinces of Spain and Gaul, this altar offers a look into past traditions. Walk inside the enclosure to the altar itself, examine the openings in the stonework designed to wash out the blood of the animals sacrificed each year on Augustus’ birthday. Four panels on the enclosure depict military victories and Roman family life. Watch a video providing information on the discovery and reconstruction of the altar, as well as the descriptions of the symbolic carvings on the enclosure. You can also choose to go downstairs to view the art exhibit. A small bookstore and audio guides are available. • Besides the Alter of Peace, there was an exhibition re-examining the case for Emporer Claudius. I had read about bribery, murderer, and whimpy, so I was not anxious to learn more about Claudius. I per...  more »
  • The external structure in my opinion (although I do not understand art practically nothing) does not fit the surrounding context, is horrible! I must admit that however, Dento is all clean, orderly and well organized, so well are aesthetically despicable structures, but guardians of immense treasures so finally valued. Good!

  • My friends told me about two magnificent ancient places to see before I leave Rome this time. This is one of them. The phenomenal, Ara Pacis-the Altar of Peace commissioned by the Roman Senate on July 4, 13 BC. That's not a typo...BC!!! This was jaw dropping beauty and a masterpiece totally worth visiting!! I bought a book about it at the museum store onsite.
  • I definitely suggest visiting this place if you're interested in ancient Rome(Augustus Emperor's period). You should not expect to see lots of art exhibits there. It's a huge building(architect Richard Meier) which is mainly dedicated to one sacrification altar called "Altar of Augustan Peace". It's a great place to relax and take your time to enjoy the view of altar from all angles.
