Museo Cappella Sansevero, Naples

A treasure chest of art and science, Museo Cappella Sansevero houses almost 30 significant works of art, among which are three notable late-Baroque statues. These intriguing sculptures were created with a marble-like substance known for its tissue-like quality, invented by Raimondo di Sangro, a prominent inventor and scientist. He spent the last years of his life reconstructing and decorating this chapel. Arguably the site's most notable piece, a sculpture of Christ covered with a thin shroud is a masterpiece created by Giuseppe Sanmartino, a distinguished sculptor of the Baroque period. The chapel also contains an exhibit of anatomical models of a mature man and a pregnant woman, their skeletons encased in hardened arteries and veins made of beeswax, iron wire, and silk. Tickets can be purchased on site, but if you want to avoid a long wait, book online well in advance. • incredible how the artist was able to make a sculpture like this, of an unparalleled beauty, life-size, representing the lifeless body of Jesus, covered with a transparent marble veil, which allows a glimpse of the battered body. Definitely not to be missed.

  • Museo Cappella Sansevero is one of the most remarkable places to visit in Naples. It is located in the heart of the old town in Spaccanapoli, between the 2 parallel streets, Via dei Tribunali and Via San Biagio Dei Librai. The covered Christ is the basic marble work with the detail of the marble veil that covers it, but the other works are remarkable, as well as in the basement the 2 works with the anatomic skeletons with their arteriovenous system, with the Smallest detail.

  • Definitely worth visiting! The Veiled Christ is even better than I expected, sadly we couldn't take any pictures. It's really alive and it truly mesmerized me how a stone can look so soft. The Anatomical Machines below is also captivating, mind bending how they were able to produce them. Def worth a visit! The museum itself is small and can be completed in 30-60mins.
  • Really worth a visit. We booked a slot online and we did not have to wait. Queues are usually pretty long, so it was a good choice. I recommend to book the audio guide too. It was informative and entertaining.
