  • To begin with, the University of Florence has several museums that are all in different areas. There are two 'natural history' museums if you want to use that terminology. The first is La Specola whic...  more »
  • If you come to Florence with your children This museum is unmissable, and it fascinates us too much. The museum offers a vast collection of fossils and remains of animals, mostly found in Tuscany. The remains of the great mammals are particularly complete and, starting from the bear at the entrance, you can see skeletons of deer, dogs, cave lions, horses, until you get to the main hall of the museum where a rhino is exhibited and a Hippopotamus and the Great proboscidates: the Mastodon Pippo and the mammoth Marta Linda and Pietro, really impressive. Peter in particular is 4 meters high, has a complete skeleton and is well exposed in the center of the room, amazes anyone. Inside the museum there are also dinosaur footprints and a room dedicated to the evolution of the current horse, whose ancestor was as small as a dog and had legs with 5 fingers instead of hoofs. Finally we arrive at the whale room, much more modern and interactive than the other halls, in which through lights and sounds have recreated the seabed in which the 10 metre long fossil whale is lying. The entrance to the museum costs 6 euros for adults, while it is free for children under 6 years of age. It is a museum that should be valued and advertised more, and absolutely worth a visit.

  • We got told at the tourist office that today was a special day with free access to the whale gallery. We thought we would have a quick look at the end of our first day visiting Florence. On our arrival though, we were very rudely informed that it was only for participants to the whale hub. Mistakes happen but keeping polite and cordial is the minimum which was far from the case from the lady at reception desk. We walked away.
  • Kids love it there and great Fossil collections
