Cittadella di Alessandria, Alessandria

4.0
The Cittadella of Alessandria is a star fort and citadel in the city of Alessandria, Italy. It was built in the 18th century by the Kingdom of Sardinia, and today it is one of the best preserved fortifications of that era. It is one of the few fortifications in Europe still in their original environment, since there are no buildings blocking the views of the ramparts, or a road that surrounds the ditches.
On 10 March 1821, during the Piedmont insurrection, the blue, red and black tricolour of the Carbonari was raised on the Cittadella's bastions by Colonel Ansaldi. This was the first use of a tricolour flag in the history of Italy.
The Cittadella has been Italy's tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 2006.
The fortress lies across the river Tanaro in the north-west side of the city of Alessandria. The site is one of the lowest in the Piedmont region with an altitude of about above sea-level.
Social, historical and geopolitical contextSince its foundation, 1168, the town of Alessandria was always meant to be a border town with a strategic-military vocation. From the 14th century has joined the Visconti of Milan against Monferrato and Asti, with the Sforza then in the 15th century, and consequently under the Spaniards rule after, throughout the 17th century.

  • I happened to happen. It was a weekday and with some of my acquaintances we went wandering around. What a disappointment! Few signs with signs, not even an open point of refreshment (at 12.00/12.40), many buildings not accessible, the Museum of uniforms open only Saturday and Sunday. The existence of old placards with old and illegible indications. A large park, very overlooked, few benches, with around green areas not accessible. Some friends were amazed at the great and exaggerated neglect in which some historic buildings, of high value for the history of Italy. They were astonished, indignants, of the more total indifference by the local authorities, for failing to give in these years greater prominence to the recovery (at least in part) of some buildings of historical value to stimulate and inculcate in the last generations the live Interest in an original military garrison and with almost more than 200 years of existence!!! Then having seen all the photos on Tripadvisor reviews, a bit have redrafted, but too disappointed at the general neglect. The park serves to defecate dogs and the rest is a cluster of unsafe buildings. They won't come back! It was recorded as an experience to forget and erase!!! Alé G467CJK

  • Great and beautiful environment but most of the blocks are to be restored. The large green space that divides the barracks is uncultivated and the ditch is almost not seen. Too bad!

  • Such a nice place to walk, do jogging or just relax, have picnic and get tanned. No lights, so the best time to visit it is before sunset. No bars or water fontains, so bring water with you. Cheers.
  • Very interesting place to visit. We spent here couple of hours with excellent guides from FAI. Be sure to contact them for a guided tour.
