According to a legend, the foundation of the abbey dates to Charlemagne times. Here he would be hunting, in the year 773, when three skeletons appeared to him from the tomb. He thus decided to build an abbey here entitled to the Virgin Mary.
Historically, the abbey most likely existed in Lombard times, and later was enlarged thanks to rich donations. In the 10th century it was destroyed by the Saracens. In 1002 it was donated by King Arduin of Italy to Oddo of Bruzolo, whose heirs gave it to the prepository of Vezzolano. The complex was rebuilt until 1189. The abbey was the seat of a religious community until the early 19th century, when it was suppressed during the Napoleonic invasion of Italy.
The abbey includes a church with a short bell tower, a cloister and a capitular hall, featuring both Gothic and Romanesque elements. For the construction sandstone and bricks were used to give a bichrome appearance to the exterior (such as in the upper façade), a feature common also in Liguria and Tuscany in the Middle Ages. In the Romanesque façade, two of the three original portals are still existing. The upper part also features small columns with arches, with a mullioned window in the middle, with Christ flanked by the archangels Michael and Raphael.
Abbazia di Santa Maria di Vezzolano Reviews
Immersa nel verde e` una costruzione fantastica e ricca di storia, l` unico rammarico e` che dovrebbe essere maggiormente conosciuta more »Immersed in greenery is a fantastic building and rich in history, the only regret is that it should be better known

This abbey, immersed in the green hills of Asti and situated in a small valley, is a jewel of Piedmontese Romanesque architecture. It is very well preserved, inside it has a very valuable partition decorated with sculptures and interesting history. Magnificent and suggestive the cloister that encloses beautiful frescoes (unfortunately many have been lost). Visitors can use some Plastified folders with excellent explanations. The visit is free.
The small but beautiful Romanesque abbey of Santa Maria Vezzolano with its echoes of the late fourteenth century, is located in the hilly territory of the municipality of Albugnano in the province and diocese of Asti. In the past, however, it was a "dioecesis nullius" ecclesiastical entity, in other words it was under the immediate jurisdiction of the pope. The so-called “abbey” of Vezzolano was actually a rectory, reformed according to Augustinian rules and it forms part of the group of religious foundations included in the reform movement of the Gregorian Church, which spread in northern Italy between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries.
Magnificent Medieval Prayer place away from the city context. I do Not dwell on the cultural aspects, consultable on the internet, but explicit my thoughts on the environment that welcomes the tourist. The Abbey is set in the greenery, near a large farmhouse. It is served by a free parking lot which was built in a small bar. Near The entrance is present in the toilet, which I have to say I found clean. I have Not noticed any facilitation with wheelchair access, but having found a metal ramp inside the church, I can assume that it can be used for the purpose, asking the custodian at the entrance. You can take pictures anywhere, but without the use of the flash. The whole thing is well cared for and clean. In the back of the abbey there is a garden with the cultivation of trees of ancient quality of apples, cultivated by the University of Turin.
