'MANJULAKSHETRA' or 'MANJESHWARA' is the name derived from the Deity "SRI MANJARISHA" or SRIMATH ANANTHESHWARA of the sacred Manjeshwar Temple.

Considered as the most ancient existing temple of the Gowda Saraswat Brahmins, the known history of the temple goes back to 8th century AD.

The temple was last renovated between 1799 A.D and 1804 A.D. after it was demolished by a nearby ruler.

H.H. Srimath Vibhudendra Theertha Swamiji-The then Peethadhipathi of Sri Kashi Math Samsthan took the initiative in resurrecting the temple and reinstalled the presiding Deity Sri Bhadra Narasimha in 1804 A.D.

RECENT RENOVATION:As the structure mainly made of laterite stone, wood and copper got deteriorated over a period of 206 years,it was decided to renovate the Sri Garbhagriha and rebuild the Namaskara Mantapa. The decision to renovate the temple was announced by the spiritual head of the temple H.H. Guruvarya Srimath Sudheendra Theertha Swamiji on 31/01/2010.H.H. also provided guidelines for the sacred but complex project.Swamiji declared during the announcement "This temple does not belong to any single family nor to the single town-Manjeshwar.Though the temple conglamorate is under the management of representatives of 18 petas(towns),it truly belongs to the entire GSB community.

Under Poojya Guruvarya's guidance, the entire GSB community joined together in renovating this sacred edifice. The dismantling of the old structure was performed on 7th february 2011.The rebuilding was completed in 75 days. The Shikara Punarpratishta, the Maharudra Shrine Punarpratishta and Sri Seshadeva Punarpraishta was conducted on 27/04/2011(chaitra bahula dashami of khara samvastara,shaka-1933)by H.H. Srimath Sudheendra Theertha Swamiji and his Pattashishya Srimath Samyameendra Theertha. The four day long programme was attended by over 300 Vaidiks and thousands of devotees from all over India.

THE SANCTUM SANCTORUM:The Sanctum Sanctorum (Sri Garbhagriha) has two parts. One can be seen by devotees and the other hidden behind the Altar(Simhasana). The entire Simhasana is built over an anthill called Rohini or ruvani in Konkani.

Visible at the bottom is the granite Shivalinga of Srimath Anantheshwara after whom the temple is named. This Linga is considered self emerged(swayambhoo). The period of its discovery is not known. On the second rung are the two deities of Nagaroopyi Subramania-one is ancient and the other recentally installed. At the center is Sri Bhadranarasimha-the presiding Deity in standing position flanked by Sridevi and Bhudevi-His consorts.Visible at the top are the idols of Sri Vittala,Sri Vedavyasa,Sri Laxminarasimha,Sri Keshava,Sri Karalanarasimha and others. Many other idols are partially visible including the Utsavamurthy of Utsava Narasimha.

ROHINI:Hidden from the public view is the anthill Ruvani-the abode of Sri Vassuki. With everence to the live snakes believed to be still inhabiting the underground paths to the Ruvani, the entire temple premises inside and outside the Sanctorum have no cement or tiles flooring.Only mud cover is plastered with cowdung from the Goshala.During rainy season water from the roofs is allowed to seep through the flooring in order to keep the snake paths cool.

The Ruvani is surrounded by Lingas of Sri Chandramouleeshwara,Sri Nandikesha,Sri Kubera,Sri Varunadeva and Sri Veerabhadra. The mud from Ruvani is offered as Moola Prasad by the chief priest only on request.
