Vogelpark Avifauna is a large bird park in Alphen aan den Rijn, in the western Netherlands. It was the first dedicated bird park in the world. The park has a lot of greenery and ponds, and also a restaurant and a children's playground. The park is owned by the Van der Valk group.
The zoo was set up in the garden of the Ten Rhijn estate by the owner, Van den Brink, and it was opened on 17 May 1950, the first bird park in the world. Toucans were featured on the posters for the park's opening, and a toucan has been depicted on the zoo's logo since, and also on the logos of the Van der Valk restaurant chain and Hotel Avifauna, which is situated on the edge of the park.
On the night of 23 December 2005 a fire broke out. About twenty birds were killed. The stables and an adjoining house were completely destroyed by the fire, and replacement buildings were completed in 2008.
In the night of 25 to 26 September 2014, a large number (36) of birds were stolen from the park. Although most of them have been found in an ongoing investigation, unfortunately, a few have died due to neglect from the thieves.

  • We were here with the grandchildren, but this spacious park is attractive for every age. Many, many special birds in mostly well cared for spaces. On the information boards at the bird stays there is a clear explanation. The two different bird demonstrations (at 13.30 hours and 15.00 hours) were great. The birds are flown over the water to the demonstration spot at the Tribune. There are feeding chats at different locations at a fixed time. Do not skip the Lori-Landing. For €1.-Buy a cup of nectar and then you are assured of Lori's on your arm or head. The playground is suitable for children of different ages. For €2.-Buy in the arcade a bracelet that gives access to a.o. electric cars, bumper cars, rotary mill, boating, inflatable and playing with Zandhap press. The staff were very friendly and helpful. .

  • The hotel offers free admission. That's very worthwhile. Fantastic the Lokis for feeding and the Cuban flamingo corner.

  • Nice hotel, good food and all you would require. The main selling point is the fact that you are next to a zoo. It is magical. I recommend a stroll true after breakfast. You can catch the birds waking up. It is a special place worth a visit. Can recommend to anyone.
  • Very nice. Stay at the (rather expensive) hotel and get free unlimited access. Several bird shows a day. Loads of birds in relative freedom and also caged. Very nice to wander around. Also several playgrounds.
