Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes, Rhodes Town

4.4
Part of Rhodes' world-famous medieval old town, Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes exists as one of the few remaining examples of Gothic architecture in Greece. Built by the Knights of Saint John, a Christian military order which controlled Rhodes from 1309 until 1522, the imposing palace features fairy-tale towers, ramparts, and more than 150 rooms. Remarkably undamaged during the Ottoman siege of the island in the 16th century, the palace suffered massive damage in 1856 when a nearby ammunition storage site exploded. Restored by Italian architect Vittorio Mesturino in the 1930s, the palace then served as a vacation home for dictator Benito Mussolini. Today the palace houses a museum noted for displaying well-preserved Hellenistic and Roman mosaic floors. • There is so much history in this place it is beyond belief. And it's perfectly preserved. The Palace is quite big and the things you can find in there are stunning. While walking through it you will experience nice and relaxing chilled atmosphere, especially if you're visiting Rhodes in the summer. This makes you understand how they were able to survive heats without ac. The tickets are not too expensive so do yourself a favour and don't avoid it, otherwise you will regret. Plus you can walk on the walls! Which is amazing. This costs extra, but the price is really cheap. On the other hand it is not anything you will regret if you don't do. I highly and honestly recommend it. One of the must when visiting Rhodes.
  • The Grand Master Palace is in Rhodes Old Town. It's a fantastic place to visit with lots of history. There is lots to see and the rooms are steeped in history. There can be queues to get in but worth waiting. There are restaurants and places to eat nearby too. These can be a bit pricey. Definitely worth a visit if you are in Rhodes Old Town.
